What you need to know to start working in landscaping.

  • What to expect on your first day on a maintenance crew

Your first day on a maintenance crew starts early and moves fast. Knowing what to expect helps you arrive prepared and make a good impression.

    Before you leave

    • Get to the meeting point before start time. On many crews the truck leaves right on time.
    • Help load the equipment and ask where everything goes.
    • Meet your crew leader: this is the person you ask about everything.

    During the day

The crew visits several properties. At each one, everyone has a task: one person mows, another edges, another blows and cleans up. At first you will get the simpler tasks while you learn.

    • Watch how the rest of the crew works and ask if something is unclear.
    • Take care of the equipment: clean and put everything away when you finish each property.
    • Respect the properties: close gates, do not step on plants and do not leave trash behind.

    Heat and your health

In California, employers must provide water, shade and rest breaks to prevent heat illness. Drink water often, even if you are not thirsty. If you feel dizzy, get a headache or feel very tired, tell your leader right away and rest in the shade.

At the end of the day

    • Help unload and clean the equipment.
    • Ask what time the crew leaves tomorrow.
    • If anything about your pay or schedule is unclear, ask about it from the start.

  • How to start working in landscaping with no experience

Many landscaping crews hire people with no experience. What they look for most is someone who shows up on time, wants to learn and can handle physical work.

    Jobs that hire beginners

    • Maintenance crew: mowing, blowing, trimming shrubs and cleanup. This is the most common way in.
    • Construction crew: planting, moving soil and stone, and installing turf. It takes strength more than experience.

Jobs like irrigation technician or tree trimmer usually ask for experience. Many people get there after some time on a crew.

What you need on day one

    • Closed-toe work boots
    • Comfortable clothes that can get dirty, plus sun protection: a cap and a light long-sleeve shirt
    • Water and food for the day
    • A phone where they can call you or send a WhatsApp message

Ask the contractor whether they provide gloves, safety glasses and hearing protection. Many do; others expect you to bring them.

    What you learn first

    • Using a mower, edger and blower safely
    • The order of work at each property
    • How to load and secure equipment on the trailer
    • What to do if you see an irrigation leak or another problem in the landscape
